Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) president David Airey has hit back at comments recently made by British housing commentator Peter Dixon in The Australian regarding the cultural influence of home ownership.
Mr Airey said it is a fact that owning a home has financial and cultural benefits and is an aspirational goal for Australians.
“However, Australians do not view or brand ople who do not own their own home as ‘some kind of loser’ as claimed by Mr Dixon,” he said.
Mr Airey said that whilst REIA promotes renting as a viable living arrangement, owning a home can, in some cases, actually be a cheaper option for lower income households.
“More importantly, any change in perceived cultural attitude would not solve a major issue for the housing sector which is a lack of housing supply,” he continued.
“We applaud anyone with knowledge participating in the debate on housing affordability, however, British cultural attitudes cannot be transferred to Australian issues such as this,” Mr Airey said.
