The Labor government is planning to deliver more homes for Territorians lacking a secure home.

The federal government has unveiled a plan to provide new funding for homes in Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory.

This new project will provide 12 new two-bedroom homes for Indigenous Australians, older women at risk of homelessness, and women and children fleeing domestic and family violence.

Julie Collins, Minister for Housing, highlighted the necessity of this project for those who are in unfortunate circumstances.

“This project is a great example of the Albanese Labor government’s commitment to ensure more Territorians have a safe and affordable place to call home,” she said.

“Our ambitious housing reform agenda is working across the board – with more help for home buyers, more help for renters and more help for Australians needing a safe place for the night.”

To assist in building these new homes the government is contributing $3 million in funding through Housing Australia.

Alongside this, the government has committed to $32 billion in new housing initiatives through the Homes for Australia plan.

These pockets of funding align with the government’s goal of building 1.2 million homes by the end of the decade.

The Labor government has allocated $50 million to the Northern Territory through the Social Housing Accelerator, a move aimed at delivering up to 100 new social homes across the territory.

Earlier this year, applications were closed for the initial round of funding under the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund and the National Housing Accord.

Marion Scrymgour, Member for Lingiari, emphasised that the project will impactfully address the unmet needs in Tennant Creek while complementing the Albanese government’s broader housing initiatives, which include a landmark $4 billion investment with the NT government to improve living conditions and tackle overcrowding in remote Territory communities.

“As your Federal Member for Lingiari, I will do everything I can to make sure funding gets to where it is needed the most and delivers the greatest benefit for Territorians,” Scrymgour stated.
