A record number of first home buyers have taken advantage of the first home owner’s grant, new statistics from the Victorian Government has found.
By the end of November, Victoria alone had handed out 49,374 grants, surpassing the full year record set in 2001 when 46,399 grants were made.
According to a report in The Australian Financial Review, the number of grants distributed in 2009 is 46 per cent greater than the same time last year and 28 per cent more than the number dispensed by the end of November 2007.
The month of November itself was 64 per cent above the same month last year and 29 per cent above November 2007.
And NSW is reporting similar statistics, with the number of grants elapsing the same month last year by 34 per cent.
In the first 11 months of 2009, the NSW government approved a record 66,306 grants representing a 67 per cent increase on the same period in 2008.
The strong results in both states are thanks to the federal government’s boost which was halved in September.
Victorian treasurer John Lenders said the global financial crisis had not stopped more families from buying their first home.
“Victorians are still buying first homes in record numbers even after the federal government wound down the extra boost,” he said.
