For the first time in its 59-year history, the Real Estate Employers’ Federation (REEF) has achieved gender parity on its committee of management, following the appointment of Jacqui Barnes, head of people and growth at Laing+Simmons.

Barnes, a veteran of the real estate and recruitment sectors with more than two decades of experience, joins the committee at a time of shifting workplace expectations and accelerating industry transformation.

Her appointment marks a symbolic milestone for REEF, a national employer association representing over 1,800 members across Australia’s real estate sector.

“It’s an honour to join REEF and contribute to an organisation that champions the interests of real estate employers,” Barnes said in a recent statement. “The workplace is evolving rapidly, and I’m passionate about helping businesses navigate change in a way that supports growth and creates strong, people-focused cultures.”

“I look forward to working with the committee to ensure employers are supported, informed and equipped for the future.”

Barnes has led initiatives at Laing+Simmons focused on fostering a “people-first” organisational culture, with an emphasis on talent acquisition, retention, and leadership development. Her track record, REEF said, aligns with its mission to support member agencies amid industry disruption and labour market recalibration.

REEF chief executive Bryan Wilcox described Barnes as “an outstanding addition” whose national perspective and focus on practical outcomes will serve the organisation well.

“Her focus on culture, performance, and practical outcomes for real estate businesses reflects the values we stand for,” Wilcox said. “She brings a valuable national perspective and her appointment ensures we continue to grow in step with the evolution of our industry.”

The move to equal gender representation arrives as Australian businesses face continued moves to modernise workplace practices, adapt to demographic shifts, and strengthen its leadership pipeline.
