As Australia’s long-awaited Tranche 2 anti-money laundering reforms move closer to enforcement, pressure is mounting on thousands of lawyers, accountants, and real estate professionals to shift from preparation to action.

The federal government is expected to finalise the Tranche 2 legislation by mid-2025, with a compliance deadline of 1 July 2026. The reforms, which will extend anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing obligations to a broad new swathe of designated non-financial businesses and professions, are the most significant shake-up in the sector’s regulatory history.

AUSTRAC has made clear that it will not hesitate to act on non-compliance. Recent enforcement cases – including ongoing proceedings against The Star and Entain – have demonstrated the regulator’s focus on systemic failures and its willingness to apply civil penalties.

For those falling under Tranche 2, the clock is ticking.

In response to overwhelming demand, the flagship Tranche 2 event AML Edge 2025 returns to Sydney on 21 October, following a sold-out debut in March. This second edition is specifically designed to move beyond theory and preparation, offering practical insights, case studies, and tools for implementation.

“This isn’t just another compliance briefing,” said Louisa Thomas, program director from premium event organiser Captivate Q. “The rules will be locked in and with guidance underway, businesses now need to translate intent into operations, fast.”

The October program will feature regulators, industry body updates, legal experts, tech innovators, and frontline businesses sharing how they are adapting to the new AML/CTF obligations. Sessions will tackle risk assessments, transaction monitoring, recruiting and training, choosing tech stacks, and the growing role of AI in compliance. Tranche 1 entities that have already built functioning AML systems will share their lessons with those now entering the regulated fold.

For real estate professionals looking for expert and peer-led guidance and practical frameworks, AML Edge 2025 is the proven go-to forum for navigating AML reforms with confidence.
