The strata community has welcomed its inclusion in the federal government’s solar battery scheme and the wider support of strata in Labor’s energy agenda.
The Strata Community Association (SCA) Australasia has welcomed the Albanese government’s inclusion of strata communities in the federal Solar Battery Scheme.
Climate Change and Energy Minister, Chris Bowen, clarified the matter in a high-level meeting with SCA president Joshua Baldwin during the first sitting week of Parliament.
The news means that residents in buildings with shared infrastructure will be able to access rebates and assistance.
The SCA said the decision marks a major achievement, with more than 5 million Australians currently living in strata-titled housing.
“This recognition highlights the government’s understanding that community living will play a central role in addressing the national housing crisis and meeting sustainability target,” it said.
The body said that the meeting focused on barriers faced by strata residents and managers when it comes to accessing energy efficiency upgrades, as well as the need for policy mechanisms to support multi-unit buildings.
Baldwin said that the news follows years of advocacy by the group in a bid to ensure strata communities are not left behind.
“To have the federal minister confirm that strata is not only included in the Solar Battery Scheme but also positioned as a key focus of future energy efficiency reforms is a landmark outcome,” Baldwin said.
“This is a direct result of sustained advocacy, and a major win for the 5 million people living in apartments and townhouses across the country.”
He added that the clarification ensures that strata communities are part of the solution to Australia’s energy transition.
“We are proud to see this government recognising the essential role strata plays in how Australians live, and committing to policies that include us, not exclude us,” he concluded.
