The Western Australian Building and Construction Consultative Committee has appointed its new chair as it continues its commitment to developing reforms for the industry.

Russell Barnett has been appointed chair of the Western Australian Building and Construction Consultative Committee (BCCC), preparing to serve a two-year term.

Barnett replaced chairperson Reginald Howard-Smith, who led the BCCC since its formation in 2022.

A partner at Australian Venture Consultants, Barnett brings more than 25 years’ experience in the industry, including previously working with the BCCC.

He helped develop the committee’s initial strategic plan and collaborated with a working group to prepare a response to the government on the Master Builders Association WA Reform Package 2022.

Barnett said he intends to work with committee members to achieve significant reforms and benefit the industry.

“I look forward to working with colleagues and friends on the BCCC to continue to formulate innovative initiatives and reforms that contribute to an increasingly safe, inclusive, productive and profitable Western Australian commercial construction industry that is an employer of first choice,” he said.

The BCCC is an advisory committee that provides policy advice to the Minister for Industrial Relations relating to the industry.

“The BCCC is focused on developing and advancing initiatives in contractual frameworks, a new approach to apprenticeships, reforming industry culture, and collaborative approaches to best practice in work, health and safety,” it said.

“Additionally, work will continue to improve diversity and culture in the construction industry as well as improve worker health and safety, particularly in the areas of worker wellbeing and psychosocial safety,” it concluded.
