Beyond ‘boys don’t cry’: Harcourts steps up for men's mental health

On International Men’s Day, Harcourts has highlighted the contributions and challenges of men within its network while encouraging the property sector to rethink long-standing perceptions.

The network said International Men’s Day on 19 November provided an opportunity to celebrate men’s positive impact in all areas of life while shining a light on the pressures and challenges they face.

Mental health struggles in the real estate industry have been rampant, with Rise Initiative data showing that 80 per cent of agents have experienced anxiety related to workload and 73 per cent experience symptoms of burnout.

 
 

Additionally, research by Beyond Blue found that 43 per cent of men experience anxiety or depression in their lifetime.

With men accounting for 75 per cent of suicides in Australia, Harcourts head of people and culture Mitch Green said it was essential for the network to develop a culture that supports men as fathers, partners, colleagues and carers.

“At Harcourts, we recognise the importance of celebrating the men in our lives and within our organisation,” Green said.

“While we generally have no trouble recognising the contributions of men, International Men’s Day gives us the opportunity to also recognise the sometimes-hidden struggles and challenges that men face.”

The network said that it considers empathy, care, and the courage to seek help as essential leadership qualities.

Green said the network will take time to celebrate positive role models and improve gender relations and men’s health as it seeks to create a more inclusive workplace.

“We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all team members, including men, can thrive and succeed.”

He stressed that the network looked to challenge the “harden up” and “boys don’t cry” narratives that often discourage men from accepting support and embracing their feelings.

“By acknowledging and addressing men’s specific needs and challenges, we create a more equitable workplace for everyone,” Green concluded.
