Australia’s national body for the building and construction sector has elected a new president to continue advocating for industry reform amid a challenging economic and work environment.
Robert Shaw has been elected as Master Builder Australia’s incoming national president, bringing more than 37 years of building and construction industry experience.
Shaw will replace Craig Edmunds, who will conclude his term as national president after three years and a decade of service as a national board member.
The organisation said Shaw had made a significant contribution to the industry nationally, bringing strong leadership skills to the residential building sector, and had been a long-standing Master Builders board member and National Residential Builders Council chair.
He was also the former president of Master Builders Western Australia, and a current member of its board of management, while he previously chaired the association’s housing council for seven years.
Master Builders Australia said that aside from his business leadership, Shaw’s broader commitment to the community was highlighted by his former role as Netball Australia President.
Shaw said that Edmunds had led the construction peak body into a new era of advocacy and solidified the foundations for reform, as he pledged to continue on with his work.
“I look forward to building on this legacy and working with the Board and members to advance the industry at a time of both challenge and opportunity,” he said.
Edmunds said that during his time as president, Master Builders Australia had strengthened national debates, secured essential policy reforms, and positioned itself as a trusted voice for the industry.
“I am proud of what we have achieved and confident the organisation will continue to thrive under new leadership,” he said.
Shaw admitted there would be challenges, including a complex economic environment, weak productivity growth, and workforce shortages, but said he was prepared to advocate for the industry.
“Master Builders will continue to lead with solutions, collaboration, and a commitment to supporting our members and the communities they serve,” he concluded.
