Western Australia housing minister Bill Marmion’s promise to "flood the market with land" has been branded as political “hot air” and “totally unhelpful” by RE/MAX WA managing director Geoff Baldwin.
During a speech to parliament last week, Mr Marmion said : “it owns land and it is looking at its land stocks and will release as much land as possible”.
Mr Baldwin said a loosening of the bureaucratic red tape that anchors developers, streamlining of government processes at all levels and a significant reduction in the inhibitive costs associated with development approvals would be much more helpful than “headline seeking announcements by yet another new minister trying to make a quick impression”.
“Property owners and investors in Western Australia want to see genuine action and are not interested in reckless, hot air statements that feed negativity and concern for current property owners and investors,” Mr Baldwin said.
According to Mr Baldwin, the government should be looking to streamline processes and reduce costs associated with property development.
“A massive contributor to land prices is all the associated government costs that inevitably reflect in the price of a block of land,” Mr Baldwin said.
“These would be a great place to start if the Treasurer is serious about affordability and supply of developed land.”
