The NSW government has announced the name of a new suburb in Sydney’s north.
Kurraba Point, which is located near Neutral Bay on the city’s north shore, has been given its own identity and mailing address following a petition by the North Sydney Council.
NSW minister for lands Tony Kelly said the decision came after extensive public consultation conducted by the Council and the Board.
“It means the suburb becomes a bona fide mailing address with the same postcode as Neutral Bay – 2089.”
Kurraba Point is a small enclave on the harbour of around 950 residences and is regarded by locals and the council as having a distinct identity. The name is derived from the Aboriginal name for this point of land, between Neutral Bay and Shell Cove.
Mr Kelly said new suburbs are created from time to time for a variety of reasons.
“Reasons range from residential development to the desire to have a distinct identity, as in this case,” he said.
Since the beginning of last year, seven new suburbs have been created in the Sydney metropolitan area. These are Wentworth Point (Auburn), Sydney Olympic Park (Auburn), Carnes Hill (Liverpool), North Wollongong, Elizabeth Hills (Liverpool), Len Waters Estate (Liverpool), and Bardia (Campbelltown).
