A new home on the Sunshine Coast has been sold at a charity auction in a bid to fund town houses for survivors of domestic violence, going under the hammer for $1.06 million.
LJ Hooker has facilitated a charity auction on the Sunshine Coast earlier this month, in a bid to help survivors of domestic violence secure stable accommodation.
LJ Hooker Mooloolaba | Mountain Creek principal, Jodi Price, sold the donated property in Banya for $1.06 million, with the proceeds going towards SunnyKids’ Transitional Housing project.
The money will help fund six town houses, enabling those impacted by domestic or family violence to move out of emergency refuges.
Price said the bidders were aware of where the money was going, which pushed them to go a little bit higher.
The home was donated by the Devon Property Group and Stockland, with around 70 local businesses, trades, and suppliers working to complete the build.
As part of its ongoing contribution, LJ Hooker Mooloolaba | Mountain Creek will donate its property management services to the town houses.
The tenants will pay subsidised rent set at a percentage of the market value, and can stay for up to two years.
LJ Hooker’s head of network Australia, Chris Keating, said the cause was closely tied to real estate, as many agents worked behind the scenes to find emergency accommodation for vulnerable families.
He said the initiative showed the results that could be achieved when local businesses, organisations and residents came together around a shared purpose.
“The SunnyKids’ Transitional Housing project is an outstanding initiative that will make a tangible difference to the lives of families impacted by domestic violence,” he said.
“The generosity demonstrated by Jodi and her team is inspiring and a wonderful example of a business giving back to their community.”
SunnyKids is a not-for-profit organisation that provides emergency accommodation and family support and advocates for people impacted by domestic violence.
In the past 12 years, LJ Hooker Mooloolaba | Mountain Creek has run several fundraisers for the charity, intending to run more events in the future.
According to Price, many people fleeing domestic violence were unable to find a home because they had no rental history or access to finances.
She said the housing project would provide them with proper references and tenant ledgers so that they could transition into regular rental accommodation in the future.
“SunnyKids will continue working with the tenants to ensure they are progressing and getting back on their feet. The aim is to help people regain their independence,” she said.
“It is a good feeling to be working on this project because we see many families affected by domestic violence, particularly through our property management team.”
