More than 50 per cent of Australians feel the government is not doing enough to solve the nation’s housing affordability issue.
According to a new poll by PRDnationwide, 63 per cent of respondents said not enough was being done to house struggling families.
PRDnationwide research director Aaron Maskrey said Australians are acutely aware that as property prices keep rising, access to affordable housing is not keeping up with demand.
“As a result of interest rates rising, a dwindling supply of affordable housing is clearly on people’s minds,” he said.
In addition, recent research by the Real Estate Institute of Australia, shows a further decline in housing affordability.
REIA Deposit Power Housing Affordability Report found that the proportion of income required to meet home loan repayments increased 0.5 percentage points to 35.3 per cent last quarter, up from 34.8 per cent in September 2010.
Throughout 2010, housing affordability decreased 4.6 percentage points.
