Home owners are spending more and more of their hard earned cash on their backyard, new research has found.

According to a poll by PRDnationwide, 37 per cent of Australians would spend their extra money on a pergola, while 28 per cent consider building a deck to be their top ‘home’ project.

PRDnationwide research director Aaron Maskrey said outdoor living is now considered an integral part of the home.

“It’s a cost effective way to improve the liveability and value of your home,” he said.

“When you take the time to plan an outdoor add-on to your home, the result can be a versatile living space and a value-boosting addition to your home.”

“Decks can be relatively inexpensive to construct but are almost considered essential by potential homebuyers,” he said.

Mr Maskrey said the idea of an outdoor living room has really materialised as people have reattached to their existing homes.

“Many Australians believe that outdoor space is as important as your indoor space,” he said.

Of the 2000 respondents surveyed, 19 per cent said they would build a shed in their backyard, while 10 per cent were looking to put in a pool or spa.

“Backyard enthusiasts are spending thousands on swimming pools with all the trimmings,” he said.
