Agents that can incorporate technology such as smartphones into their business are “light years” ahead of the competition, an industry professional said today in response to the results of an online survey.

“All agents know that verbal communication plays a vital role in the real estate business. But when you combine strong verbal communication skills with the use of technology, these agents really are light years ahead of their competition,” Tom Garland, of Ray White Caloundra in Queensland, told Real Estate Business today.

Mr Garland said agents who are not using smartphones are inadvertently putting themselves at a disadvantage to their tech savvy peers.

“Smartphones can really boost any agent’s business. You can literally stand in the front of your client’s house and with the touch of a button, you can access listings in the local area, median prices, and sales figures.”

These comments followed a recent online Real Estate Business strawpoll, which found 70.6 per cent of respondents are using smartphones to assist with their business.

The strawpoll result mirrored the findings of a recent survey by Telstra, which revealed 46 per cent of Australian mobile phone owners now had a smartphone. This figure was expected to grow to 60 per cent in the next 12 months, said Telstra consumer executive director Rebekah O'Flaherty.

“It’s clear smartphones are becoming an inseparable part of our lives,” she said.
