Principals can no longer bury their heads in the sand when it comes to occupational work and safety (OH&S) issues, said a leader in risk management.
Richard Gilley, principal of InterRISK Australia, told a packed room of agents and principals at an industry event held in Parramatta, in Sydney's west, that knowledge of safe work methods were paramount to any business, as is a practical understanding of relevant legislative changes.
“It is no longer a case of bury your head in the sand,” he said at the 'industry update' event, jointly run by the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales (REINSW) and Real Estate Employers' Federation (REEF) of NSW.
“If someone under your duty of care, including contractors, clients and employees, is injured you must show you have reasonably tried to prevent any risks otherwise you could be found liable under the criminal code of NSW.”
The REINSW/ REEF Industry Update included an address from Greg Paterson, the executive director of REEF NSW, a presentation by Don Jone, assistant commissioner, compliance and enforcement at NSW Fair Trading, and an update by REINSW CEO, Tim McKibbin and REINSW president, Christian Payne.
A series of industry updates are being held in 20 locations across NSW, including Sutherland, Campbelltown, Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Newcastle, Gosford, Tamworth, Dubbo, Orange, Goulburn, Wagga Wagga, Batemans Bay and Wollongong, through to May 25.
