Microsoft launches iPad challenger

Real estate professionals will soon have an alternative device to Apple’s iPad, with the launch of Microsoft’s new tablet computer, ‘Surface’.

The new tablet, which will operate on a variation of Windows 8, weighs around the same as an iPad with a 10.6 inch screen, according to a report in The New York Times.

According to Microsoft, the new tablet also features a built-in kickstand, and has a 3mm ‘Touch Cover’ that senses keystrokes as gestures, enabling users to touch type “significantly faster” than with an on-screen keyboard.

“You can also click in a 5 mm-thin Type Cover that adds moving keys for a more traditional typing feel,” Microsoft said.

Availability for the Australian market wasn’t disclosed.

“Surface for Windows RT will release with the general availability of Windows 8, and the Windows 8 Pro model will be available about 90 days later,” the company said. “Both will be sold in the Microsoft Store locations in the U.S. and available through select online Microsoft Stores.

“Suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC.”
