The Real Estate Institute of NSW (REINSW) Award for Excellence for Auctioneering was dominated by one company yesterday, with independent auctioneering firm Cooley Auctions taking out three of the final four positions.

Damian Cooley, Andrew Cooley and Paul Millett, from Cooley Auctions, all made the final four of the top award for auctioneering in NSW.

Cooley Auctions director Damien Cooley was thrilled with the result.

“This is a tremendous outcome that reaffirms the enormous level of skill, experience and professionalism that our auctioneers are known for, and really reinforces our position as being some of the best auctioneers in the country," he said.

“I’m so proud of the team, especially Paul Millett and Andrew Cooley, who both join me as a finalist”, said Mr Cooley.

The competition required entrants to conduct a mock live auction in front of a panel of judges after being given seven days to familiarise themselves with the property.

According to the REINSW, competitors were judged against a range of criteria including their description of the property, ability to handle the bidding, correctly answering bidders’ questions and overall presentation.

Damien Cooley told Real Estate Business that the judges threw competitors in the deep end.

"They asked questions that would usually be covered in the days leading up to the auction, like settlement periods and deposit percentages. But they were asked mid-auction to throw us all off.

"In 2010 we had two people from our office in the final four, but this is the first time three people have been included."

The winner of the competition will be announced at the 2012 REINSW Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner to be held in October.
