South Australia-based Magain Real Estate, which opened its third office early this month, has a new boss after former CEO Barrie Magain handed the reins to one of the company's top agents, Mike Dobbin.

Mr Dobbin, who was ranked 81st in Real Estate Business' Top 100 Agents list, started with Barrie Magain Real Estate 11 years ago. He opened his own Magain franchise in 2008, and has added more offices since that time.

“My goal from day one was to open three offices in four years,” Mr Dobbin told Real Estate Business. “We opened the second office up in two years, and this third one came right on the four year mark.”

Mr Dobbin started in Happy Valley and opened the Woodcroft office next. The new office has been opened in Ascot Park, and Mr Dobbin said present staff numbers wouldn't be changed.

Mr Dobbin described his transition into the CEO role as "smooth".

“There were rumours flying around that Barrie was retiring, he’s in his sixties now," he said. "But he is still going to be part of the Magain team as a consultant."

“The company has been his baby for years, so I still wanted him to have some part to play in it.

“He even bought me a bag this morning with the word ‘CEO’ printed on the side, so it’s been really good.”

Mr Magain started his agency in 1978, and was a former president of the Real Estate Institute of South Australia (REISA).

Magain Real Estate plans to expand into areas north and south of Adelaide.

“Our new goal is eight offices in eight years," Mr Dobbin said. "It will be a lot easier to open the next five offices over four years than these first three have been over the same time.

“When you have the name and the infrastructure backing you, it will make it easier to spread.”
