Budding auctioneers battled it out for a place in the finals of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s Novice Auctioneer Competition at the heats held this week.

The competition is categorised into residential and commercial and industrial, and allows auctioneers to test their skills on a live audience, while also competing for the coveted title.

There were 34 contestants in the Residential Novice Auctioneers Competition, with six finalists named.

Asset manager at hockingstuart Commercial Marcus Tanti was a finalist in both the residential and commercial and industrial categories.

He told Real Estate Business he chose to compete in the REIV Novice Auctioneer Competition as a form of personal and professional development.

“I wanted to boost my confidence in real estate and dealing with people. I felt if I can go up and do this, I can do everything else,” he said.

The competition came at a good time for Mr Tanti, who had recently completed a 10-week auctioneering training course held by hockingstuart.

“During the whole 10-week course, you’re pushed and put out of your comfort zone,” he said.

At the end of the course, participants competed in the hockingstuart Novice Auctioneers Competition.

In preparation for the REIV competition heats, Mr Tanti did extra research that included watching videos on YouTube and attending Saturday auctions to observe other hockingstuart agents.

For the commercial and industrial heat, Mr Tanti auctioned off a commercial retail property, while for the residential heat, he auctioned off a 1920s period home.

“It was nerve-wracking, but I drew a lot of comfort from the rigorous course that hockingstuart put us through and the hockingstuart competitions, which certainly prepare you well,” he said.

The finalists were annouced as:

•    Alex Raimundo, Nelson Alexander
•    Nick Smith, Jellis Craig
•    Nichols Goold, hockingstuart Glen Iris
•    Robert Pierantozzi, Nelson Alexander
•    Marcus Tanti, hockingstuart Commercial
•    Travis Keenan, hockingstuart Richmond

The REIV Residential Final will be held on Tuesday 1 October.
