Young agents lack commitment: Steinwede

Young real estate agents lack commitment to working hard to produce successful results in their careers, according to a leading real estate agent and trainer.

Speaking at the second Young Real Estate Agents event in Sydney last night, director and business owner at McGrath Estate Agents Mat Steinwede said he had seen many agents come and go in his office.

This was due to agents' not having the patience and dedication to persevere over time when they started out in their career.

"I love young agents," he said. "I love this industry and the opportunity that it can create for the industry.

"[But] it takes three to five years for things to start happening."

In his address, he shared his advice to agents and how they could carve out a successful career in the industry.

“Success is very different to what you hear trainers talk about in real estate,” he said. “Scripts and dialogue will not make you successful. The best way to predict the future is to create it.

“I really want you to understand that you can create anything in this industry that you want.”

Mr Steinwede spoke of how he became one of Australia’s top agents.

“For the first 12 months, I had no car. I was walking from suburb to suburb door knocking and looking for business,” he says.

He was so committed to establish himself that he would tell clients that if they were not happy with his service he would mow their lawns for free.

Mr Steinwede told agents that circumstances could sometimes be tough and not how they would want things to be.

“What matters are the choices that you make and how long you stay,” he said. “You have got to have a formula that’s yours, something you can stick to and that has a purpose.”

Agents needed to be consistent to expect consistency in return, he added.

CEO of Harcourts NSW Rob Forde told Real Estate Business Mr Steinwede’s story would resonate strongly with agents at the event.

“Mat’s got an incredible story of the way that he’s progressed in his career through real estate and that’s something that’s very inspiring to a lot of younger people,” he said.

“For a lot of aspiring people in the industry to see that you can have that success in real estate with a balance is critical and that’s the key message.”

Mr Forde said he was pleased with the growing support for the event which he attributed to its high calibre of speakers.

The next Young Real Estate Agents networking event will be held at the end of this year.
