The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has welcomed the federal government’s decision to abolish the National Housing Supply Council (NHSC) as an opportunity to take a fresh look at Australia’s housing supply challenge.
HIA chief executive industry policy and media Graham Wolfe said reporting on the supply of housing in Australia, identifying the extent of housing undersupply and making recommendations to address Australia’s housing supply needs were essential tasks.
“Actual and projected housing supply is vital to all levels of government to inform their planning decisions for future service delivery for the community, infrastructure investment and addressing housing shortfalls,” he said.
“What the current state of supply is, what will be needed in the future, where it will be located, what household formation will look like and what type of housing is needed are all important questions that need answers.
“With investment decisions being made over a long period and planning outcomes for major developments taking up to 10 years, it is essential the industry has access to credible sources of data and analysis.”
Mr Wolfe explained that in its earlier days, the NHSC had validated Australia’s housing undersupply problems and identified supply-side impediments that inhibited the delivery of new homes.
"It had strong industry connections and was able to access and analyse information and data from both industry and federal, state and local government sources," he said.
“In recent times, the NHSC has shifted away from its core housing supply role. Today’s announcement should provide the catalyst to once again focus on housing supply outcomes, and we look forward to working with government and Treasury in these endeavours.”
