The Real Estate Institute of New South Wales (REINSW) has recognised outgoing minister for fair trading Anthony Roberts for his contribution to the industry.
NSW premier Barry O’Farrell announced a cabinet reshuffle this week, with Mr Roberts now taking the role of resources, energy and special minister of state.
Stuart Ayres will now assume the role as minister for fair trading.
REINSW CEO Tim McKibbin praised Mr Roberts for being responsible for several key reforms within the industry.
“Mr Roberts recognised the role of the property sector and championed some very important reforms within the market and the profession during his time as minister for fair trading," he said.
“Of particular note was the introduction of mandatory professional indemnity insurance and the review of NSW strata laws, which is well underway.
“Incorporating mandatory professional indemnity insurance as part of licensing was an important step forward for real estate practice in NSW and came about after years of lobbying.
“We look forward to working with new minister for fair trading Stuart Ayres to ensure the industry continues to be front of mind for the O’Farrell government.”
In October, Mr Roberts told Real Estate Business he was concerned about the lack of consultation between the National Occupational Licensing Authority and the real estate industry.
“One of the key frustrations is that if you’re going to do something, you’ve got to have sincere consultation and you’ve got to give people time to raise concerns and issues, and you should be responsive to that, and I think that’s been a real failure," he said.
