Set goals in your private life before business goals

Rather than setting your business goals ahead of your personal ones, happiness can be achieved by basing your business plan around your private life, says the head of one franchise.

Real estate is renowned for being tough on relationships, according to industry veteran and partner of Barry Plant Tony Larkin.

“There are a lot of breakups and lot of high performers who work way too many hours,” he told Real Estate Business.

“What a lot of agents fail to do is plan as much outside the business as you do inside the business; they don’t set goals for their private life.”

Most families starting out in real estate have high expectations, according to Mr Larkin.

“What happens is that they get into the business, they put a lot of effort into accomplishing their business goals while the partner is initially happy, but that wears off when after a few months they realise they’re never home,” he said.

But Mr Larkin claims through a bit of communication with families or partners, agents can make the best of both worlds.

“You need to set goals that the family wants to achieve," he said. "You look at that plan and work out how much work you’ll have to do in order to accomplish your home goals.

“This way, if you do work late a few extra nights a week or you don’t see your partner over a weekend, they know what it’s for.

“You set your business goals and go home to your spouse or family and share those goals, so you’re on the same page.”

The advice is just one part of Mr Larkin’s session at next week’s Ideas Exchange in Sydney entitled ‘Five Keys to Double Productivity and Income’.
