The first auction 'Super Saturday' is imminent, with Melbourne expecting a record number of auctions for the usual pre-AFL Grand Final climax to the early spring selling season.

Melbourne will host its first 'Super Saturday' of the spring selling season this weekend, with 985 homes scheduled to go under the hammer - well up on the 842 auctions conducted last weekend and the 865 recorded over the same super Saturday weekend last year.

According to Domain Group senior economist Dr Andrew Wilson, relatively higher numbers of auctions are typically conducted over the third weekend in September as sellers avoid the significant distractions of the year’s biggest football game held the following Saturday.

“Melbourne’s inner suburban areas dominate super Saturday auction listings, which is typical of the higher-priced composition of the spring market,” he said.

“The most popular region for auctions this weekend is the inner city with 166, followed by the inner south with 159, the inner east with 154, the west with 149 and the north east with 134 auctions scheduled.

“The most popular suburb for auction listings this weekend in metro Melbourne is clearly Hawthorn in the inner east with 25, followed by Reservoir in the north east with 21,” he added.

Spring auction numbers in Sydney have predictably risen steadily over recent weekends, with this weekend’s 620 listings well ahead of last weekend’s 570 auctions and similarly well up on the 565 auctions conducted over the same weekend a year ago.

“The upper north shore will host the most number of auctions with 102, followed by the city and east with 101, the inner west with 99, the south with 67, the lower north shore with 63, Canterbury Bankstown with 46, the northern beaches with 41 and the west with 37 auctions scheduled,” Dr Wilson said.

“The most popular suburb for auctions this weekend in Sydney is again Mosman on the lower north shore with 17 auctions scheduled.

“This is followed by Surry Hills in the city and east with 13, St Ives on the upper north shore with 11, Ryde also on the upper north shore with 10, Chatswood again on the upper north shore with nine, and Strathfield in the inner west and Baulkham Hills in the north west each with eight auctions scheduled this weekend,” he added.
