The Real Estate Institute of Queensland has appointed long-time deputy CEO Antonia Mercorella to the big chair, effective immediately.

Ms Mercorella was deputy CEO and general counsel for the REIQ since 2010 and becomes the first female CEO in the organisation’s history.

REIQ chariman Rob Honeycombe said Ms Mercorella had been acting CEO since June when she stepped in following the departure of former CEO Anton Kardash.

Mr Kardash left the organisation amidst what he said was the “board indicating it wanted a change in direction and that he was now pursuing other opportunities”.

Mr Honeycombe said Ms Mercorella would drive a renewed focus within the organisation on member needs and the essential services needed to support estate agents.

“Antonia fits very closely within the demographic of our members and the modern profession, and her appointment reflects the board’s desire to reflect the changing nature of REIQ’s membership … we are very confident she is the right person for the job at hand,” Mr Honeycomb said.

Ms Mercorella said she will tighten the REIQ’s focus on its core operations of supporting members, providing advice, training and education.

“The REIQ is also responsible for raising professional standards within the profession, providing the tools and resources that practitioners need, and making robust representations to government on their behalf," she said.

“This will be my focus, and the focus of the REIQ under my leadership.”
