Having recently signed some big names such as US import Haley Jones and homegrown hero Jaz Shelley to the roster, the Geelong United team has inked another important deal, this one with a real estate network.
Buxton Real Estate will be the major partner of Geelong United Basketball (GUM) for the 2024 season of the Women’s National Basketball League, as the team prepares to debut in the league when the games kick off in October 2024.
Following a takeover of the Melbourne Boomers WNBL licence earlier this year, the team will reportedly play out of the Geelong Arena as plans take shape for a larger stadium, with the Buxton branding proudly flying as one of the team’s biggest supporters.
Buxton Real Estate’s CEO, Marcus Williams, said the network chose to throw its support behind Geelong’s women’s side out of a recognition that it’s important for the brand to give back to community organisations that it believes in.
“We are thrilled to show our continued support to associations that encourage community participation in sport and foster wellbeing and a sense of belonging in regional areas,” Williams said.
This will be the first time Geelong has been represented by a WNBL team since 1986. That fact, coupled with the brand’s desire to support women in sports, convinced Buxton to back the basketball team.
“With a strong presence across many of Victoria’s regional and major cities, we recognise the important role our agents play in supporting their local community to pursue their property dreams, so it’s important to give something back to the neighbourhoods that support us,” Williams said.
GUM currently boasts the involvement of nearly 1,000 community teams and over 500 pathway players, making it one of the largest sporting associations in Geelong.
Connie Bolger, general manager of partnerships and marketing at GUM, said the organisation was glad to welcome Buxton Real Estate as a major partner for this season and excited to be “working together to support our athletes and build a strong community around women’s basketball”.
Buxton’s support of local sporting groups complements its commitment to contributing to charitable causes. The deal with GUM comes on the back of its recent gift to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), which saw the group raise over $30,000 for the charity in August, 2024.
Buxton has a longstanding relationship with the NCBF, having contributed over $1.4 million since first aligning with the foundation in 2007.
