It’s no secret that real estate has the potential to be a lonely gig. It’s a competitive arena where the highs are high, and the lows can be devastating. It begs the question, are you getting the support you need?

Because even though being an agent, property manager or agency owner can be demanding, you shouldn’t have to feel like you’re on your own.

The author of your own story

The wonderful thing about this industry is that it offers the potential to be the author of your own story. You have the freedom to write your own pay cheque, based on the hours you put in and the legwork you do.

But with that freedom comes challenge. As agents and property managers, we work in one of the few industries where not only do we have to successfully market then sell or rent our product, we have to source and secure it, while also marketing ourselves as well.

In the process, we need to motivate ourselves to do the small activities each day that add up to create the results we want.

None of this is rocket science, but that’s not to say it’s easy either. And that’s why we need support.

Regardless of whether you’re starting out, an industry veteran, running an agency, or working for a big-name brand, the right support plays a crucial role in both your career success and your personal wellbeing.

So, what should that support look like?

Training

It doesn’t matter what stage of your career you are at, each of us benefits from regular training and upskilling.

After all, what worked in yesterday’s market may not work tomorrow, and the tools and technology that are available evolve each day.

Engaging in regular training is about fostering a habit of lifelong curiosity and learning. It’s about ‘sharpening the saw’, expanding your skillset and investigating if there’s a better way.

It’s also about exploring what works and what doesn’t for you, along with discovering the interesting tools and techniques used by others in this field.

Mentoring

As mentioned before, the freedom this industry affords often presents its own set of challenges, with discipline, motivation and forming good habits being among them.

That’s where mentoring can be invaluable, creating an environment of aspiration, advice, and accountability.

Importantly, real estate is an industry packed full of generous people who are more than willing to give their time and guidance to others.

Whether it’s someone you admire professionally, someone who’s ethos you hold in high regard, or simply a workmate who will help hold you accountable to your own goals, seek out people you can trust and who you feel you can learn from, who will willingly support you on your journey.

Business support

Make no mistake, even if you’re an agent working for a big-name agency, you are running your own business.

And this endeavour requires support, in the form of training, systems, procedures, technology and just good old-fashioned guidance on how to work efficiently and effectively while honouring your financial, legal and taxation obligations.

If you’re not getting that support, you should be, because solid business support allows you to concentrate on what you do best.

Health and wellbeing

For too many years, health and wellbeing took a backseat to the real estate rhetoric of ‘hustle, and grind’.

Fortunately, the tide has turned, with a renewed focus on health and wellbeing, and an array of tools, techniques, and training are now available.

The reality is your health and wellbeing are paramount. Yes, this industry requires hard work and commitment but not at the expense of a work life balance that allows you to foster the personal relationships that matter to you most.

A network

No person is an island, and it’s important to surround yourself with a cheer squad of likeminded professionals who know the challenges you’re facing.

Whether you bounce ideas off them, simply connect with them socially, or just value having someone to talk to, this network creates a safe place where you can ride the rollercoaster of real estate alongside your peers.
