A two-time REIV Auctioneer of the Year is raising the hammer at this year’s Good Friday Appeal (GFA) charity auction, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to The Royal Children’s Hospital.
The auction will be held on Good Friday, 18 April, under the direction of Paul Tzamalis from The Auction Company.
Tzamalis, a veteran of the Victorian auctioneering market, was named Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) Auctioneer of the Year in 2024 and 2021.
The auctioneer previously led the Good Friday Appeal (GFA) in 2022, where he notched up the first-ever million-dollar sale, and achieved a record $1,082,000.
While auctioning the 2022 GFA home gave Tzamalis a great insight into a hospital’s indispensable role – his personal history with the centre dates back to when he was a child.
“I was taken there myself, with asthma, as a kid,” Tzamalis explained.
“It’s a very important backup for parents, definitely, and we’re blessed to have its services available,” he added.
Tzamalis said this year’s auction to support the Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital is even more personal as he prepares to become a father for the first time.
“Unless you’ve had to deal with The Royal Children’s, we kind of take it for granted, but it is such an integral part of the fabric of families in Victoria,” Tzamalis said.
Even though Tzamalis hopes to not require the Royal Children’s services in the future, he said that “the safety net it provides makes us one of the luckiest places in the world”.
This year’s charity home is a fully furnished, seven-star property which was built by home builder Henley, on a 521-square-metre lot in Mount Duneed that was donated by Villawood Properties.
Beyond premium features such as walk-in robes in all bedrooms, an expansive kitchen and a dedicated wine room, Tzamalis said he will also “paint a picture” of what the home will mean for its future owner.
“They’ll already know the features. When they’re bidding, my job is to put them in the home, as if they can already see their kids in the local school, see themselves driving into the garage,” Tzamalis said.
The GFA home will go under the hammer on Good Friday, 18 April, at 19 Electric Crescent Mount Duneed, and will be accompanied by a family street party with food stalls and entertainment, expected to draw up to 1,000 people.
REIV CEO, Kelly Ryan, said it was “inspiring to see everyone unite in support of the incredible work done by the Royal Children’s Hospital”.
“I have no doubt that Paul will give his absolute best to achieve the best possible outcome on the day,” Ryan said.
“The REIV is proud to contribute to this remarkable initiative,” she concluded.
