The new agency that’s ‘not just about the deal’

An innate hustle and “a strong passion against 95 per cent of what the industry has become” has pushed one agent to launch his own Queensland agency.

Antony Thompson launched Brisbane’s blac property group in January 2021 out of a desire to create a better way of doing business across the real estate industry — in a way that focuses on “real people that care about clients”.

Having moved from Liverpool, England, to Australia at 15, Mr Thompson said that he learnt to find his hustle at a young age.

“There’s a lot to be said about the river cities in England,” he reflected.

“There’s a lot of tough-as-nails, working-class people doing gritty work and physical labour. To get away from that, you have to be adaptive and good at talking.”

Mr Thompson worked a series of jobs that eventually led him to real estate, where he emerged as a natural sales agent through his own acknowledgment of an “innate hustle” and his “gift of the gab”.

The new business owner previously worked as part of an executive team for a high-performing agent before becoming an agent himself. He then went on to run a business with a partner, before deciding to go it alone — and blac property group was born.

From the beginning, Mr Thompson said that he aims to operate on an approach that is not considered typical — but rather, genuine.

“We don’t wear suits. We don’t wear ties. I don’t want to look like the rest of the agents — I really don’t,” the new business owner said.

“I have a strong passion against 95 per cent of what the industry has become.

“Our biggest thing is being real people that care about our clients. It’s not just about the deal. It’s about doing the right thing, getting the best prices, and being genuine about it.”

Mr Thompson said that he has built the agency on the back of innovative marketing and seamless property buying, with the business powered by UrbanX.

“I want to make it as easy for someone to buy a house as it is to buy a pair of sunglasses off social media… literally processes that are seamless,” he said.

Touting his understanding of modern marketing structures that goes beyond “just boosting ads on Facebook”, the business owner has flagged how the agency also boasts a completely paperless and 100 per cent online operation.

He’s extremely proud to now be helming a business that’s completely his own, and is encouraging of others who have the desire to do the same. 

Stating that the experience of starting his own brand has made him “become a different person”, he argued that “it makes no sense to be giving your money away to franchises and their principals”.

“It’s freeing when you realise you don’t need them and that’s when the opportunity will open up to back yourself,” Mr Thompson concluded.
