Following Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s new guidelines for auctions and open houses, the real estate industry has developed a workaround, with technology aiding agents, a platform states.

Mr Morrison addressed the media last night where he confirmed a series of new restrictions are set to be applied as part of the government’s efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19 on Australian shores.

“In the retail space, auction houses, gathering together in auctions rooms, that can no longer continue,” the PM said.

“Real estate auctions and open house inspections, that cannot continue.”

These bans are set to come into effect from midnight on Wednesday, 25 March.

To help aid agents through a difficult period, realestate.com.au today announced the launch of a new digital feature to support real estate agents to connect with more consumers in a way that reflects today’s environment with limited social interactions.

REA Group general manager – core products Tim Bradley said digital inspections will allow agents to use videos to showcase listings to potential buyers and renters. The new feature is now available in the “Inspections” sections of buy and rent listings on realestate.com.au and will be live on the app in the coming days.

“Digital Inspections is a really user-friendly feature — the videos can be professional or even a walkthrough taken on a phone,” Mr Bradley said.

“It’s the perfect solution to taking buyers and renters on a digital tour of properties to help them discover features they would normally see when attending a traditional open for inspection.”

REA Group chief sales officer Kul Singh said REA is focused on doing everything it can to support the property market through these unprecedented times.

“We want our customers and consumers to know that the property market is still open for business and inspections remain open online,” Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh highlighted the real estate industry needs to be part of the solution, and digital platforms allow the industry to continue without spreading the virus further.

“Digital Inspections is the first of our new features to help the market adapt to the evolving conditions. We all have a responsibility to flatten the curve when it comes to the spread of COVID-19 and we are focused on helping our customers continue to operate their businesses in a safe environment,” Mr Singh concluded.
