A builder has been slapped with a $15,000 fine after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to offences carried out at three separate South‑East Queensland properties.

Nicholas William Parsons appeared in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on 20 January, pleading guilty to 13 charges over misconduct that occurred between June 2022 and July 2023.

The offences related to unlicensed building work, improper use of a licence number, taking excessive deposit amounts, and failing to have a compliant contract in place before commencing work.

Parsons’ offences included advertising on Facebook Marketplace as a builder and electrician.

According to the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC), the offending involved separate matters at properties in Logan Central, Lawnton, and Caboolture South.

Parsons was also issued with a Direction to Rectify (DTR) for defective work, which he failed to comply with, and was fined $3,096.

“In that case, the home owner paid $20,965 and later obtained a QCAT order against Parsons for $18,250,” the QBCC said.

QBCC CEO and commissioner, Angelo Lambrinos, said the consequences of Parsons’ actions showed the repercussions of operating outside the law and causing home owners distress.

He said the QBCC would continue to crack down on misbehaviour to protect residents against deliberate, repeated offending.

“Residents are entitled to feel safe and assured when a contractor enters their home, which is why we urge owners to check licences, understand deposit limits, and ensure they have a written, dated and signed contract in place before work begins,” he said.

“Unlicensed offending also takes work from appropriately licensed individuals and companies who are experienced, qualified and who do the right thing,” Lambrinos concluded.
