Between learning the ropes, finding a mentor, and building the right team, starting a real estate career can be challenging. A top young agent told REB what fuelled his success.
Growing up, Place New Farm lead agent Flyn Park did not think about real estate; starting his career on a whim at just 21 years old, unsure about the industry and whether it was something he wanted to do long term.
Yet, when Park found an environment he enjoyed and felt supported in, it gave him the clarity he needed to understand his place in the industry.
“It allowed me to really step back, understand my role better, and build from there,” Park said.
Now three years later, Park enjoys his job, making his mark every day and transacting over 40 sales last year.
He said the biggest lessons he learned early on were that the business is built on strong relationships and that success doesn’t happen overnight.
“It’s really important to build trust, credibility and long-term connections.”
“It takes time, but putting in genuine care really sets you up for a springboard for a really successful career.”
He said new agents should look to identify opportunities to provide clients with value without asking for anything in return, as that will pay dividends in the long run.
“It’s about nurturing the relationships you have and providing value in the long term, not chasing a quick win.”
When starting out at an agency, Park said that new agents should leverage the team’s prior connections as a “stepping stone” for their own growth.
He said that leveraging the pre-established relationships gave agents a credibility boost early on in their careers.
When having less life experience becomes an advantage
While being young can be perceived as a disadvantage, Park said his youth gives him an edge when competing with other agents, as he works harder to establish himself in the industry.
“I’m young, I don’t have a family, I don’t have anything else going on, so I can prioritise spending all of my time within the business.”
“It’s something a lot of other agents in the area can’t do, because they are older and have established lives outside of work that they need to take care of.”
”For me, everything I do is based around the business.”
He said that young agents who built a strong foundation of market knowledge would position themselves as local experts and attract more listings.
“I have gained so much momentum due to the fact that I have very good market knowledge and I know what is happening within the area, and that has been proven through results.”
“That has given me credibility.”
Marathon, not a sprint
Park said young agents needed to remain patient and remember that real estate was not a career that would result in overnight success.
“This industry is super rewarding, but agents should be focusing on adding value, building trust, and creating long-term relationships rather than chasing quick wins,” he said.
“It’s a long career, and it’s important to sustain yourself throughout it.”
If he was feeling impatient about his progress early on in his career, Park said that he looked to lean on those around him who had been through similar experiences.
“Although it can be very frustrating banging your head against a wall for months and months, it will compound and build at some point,” Park said.
“It’s about doing the hours, doing the right actions every day an at some point it is going to click and result in what you need.”
He said that by setting consistent systems that support the agent in their processes, they could scale their growth in a way that ensures long-term success.
“You don’t want to come in and think you can take over the world.”
“It’s about building the foundation so that you can grow and progress year on year.”
