Plan for a successful 2016

By Cristel Stenhouse
16 December 2015 | 1 minute read

As we move into 'silly' season it’s so easy to switch off. Let's face it, with all of the Christmas parties and extra food – it’s hard not to.

Having said that, this is the time to keep motivated and plan for 2016.  Be ahead of the game and utilise this time to write down what you want to achieve for 2016 both professionally and personally.

Call this your business plan for 2016.

Think about the following:

  • What is your magic number (we all have one!), and how are you going to get there.
  • What has worked this year? What hasn't?
  • What was your best lead source?
  • What could you have done differently?
  • What is your goal/target for 2016?
  • What are your barriers?
  • Do you need any other tools?
  • Do you need training in any areas?

Your 2016 can be enhanced by following 3 simple steps.

Step 1: Write a business plan

Business planning is essential for the success of any business.  A business plan provides direction and keeps you on track.  Write down your targets and goals. Work out how you are going to reach them.  Keep it at your desk and refer to it constantly.

Step 2: Create an 'empowering vision board'

For those of you who haven't heard of a vision board – wow, will you be thanking me later! A vision board is probably one of the most valuable visualisation tools available.  It helps clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal. Literally, a vision board is any sort of board on which you display images that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life.  It serves as your image of the future.

Find pictures that represent what you want in your life, daily affirmation, quotes – anything you feel will inspire and lead you to have those items in your life. Paste them to the board and place it somewhere you will look at it every day.

There are even apps for this now!

Step 3: Develop an attitude of gratitude

Love your job! No one wants to work with a worn-out property manager that complains about every tenant and owner.

As a fellow property manager I understand all too well the demands of the job – and you really do need to wear many hats to do this job at a high standard. Remember to focus on the positives.

Be thankful every day for your tenants and landlords – they are the reason you have a job.

Develop an attitude of gratitude.

Remind yourself next time when your most demanding tenant or owner calls – “without you I have no job” – practice gratitude.

As Quincy Jones said "The people who make it to the top – whether they’re musicians, or great chefs, or corporate honchos – are addicted to their calling … [they] are the ones who'd be doing whatever it is they love, even if they weren’t being paid."

If you haven’t already set your business plan for 2016 you’re doing yourself an injustice.

Make 2016 your biggest year thus far – get planning!
