Ranked 20th in REB’s Top 100 Agents 2016, Piers van Hamburg of McGrath Estate Agents Neutral Bay has gone from strength to strength since revamping his real estate career in 2004 – here’s why.

6.30am I wake up and do some exercise in the morning: I go for a walk or a run, or I go to the gym.

8.15am After I come home, get changed and have breakfast, I put two of the kids in the car and drop them both off at school at about 8.15. I grab a coffee on the way to the office.

8.45am Generally I'll be in the office by now.

9am I have a 9 o'clock team debrief about how the weekend went, and what our plan is for the day – that goes for about 45 minutes.

10am – 1pm I generally try not to do buyer appointments before 1 o'clock, so between that time and 1 o'clock I’ll follow up with buyers or do some prospecting.

My prospecting is all very warm prospecting; it's talking to past clients and following up on people in my pipeline. My team do other prospecting but generally they will ring clients about listings and auction invites. I do the really warm stuff, while they do more of the colder prospecting.

1pm – 2pm In the afternoon I'm probably out at meetings, for example with property developers.

2pm – 4pm Market appraisals.

4.30pm I pick up my boy from soccer, drop him at home, then I might drop in to a photography shoot, and then I'll talk to my vendors in the car on the way home.

I try and talk to my clients on a daily basis. I don't like them calling me – I like to call them. If a vendor is calling me too much, then I’m not talking to them enough.

6.30pm I like to try and be home ideally by 6 o'clock, 6.30 – I very rarely do 7 or 8 o’clock appointments these days; I really like to make sure that I can put my kids to bed.

I think that to be able to do big numbers for a long period of time, you need to be really organised, and you need to have work/life balance, keep yourself fit, and not let real estate run you. It's just something to be conscious of – and I don't have the energy that I did when I was 25, so it's energy management.
