The federal government has touted the NBN as a high-speed internet service that will enable all Australians to be more efficient and connected. But what will the NBN do for real estate agents?

The more people view your property, the more likely you are to sell it. That’s according to Keyes & Co Property, an agency in Townsville, Queensland.

As potential buyers are increasingly going online to research real estate, Keyes & Co Property owner Damien Keyes has incorporated virtual tour technology in his marketing campaigns.

“We use a lot of high resolution 360-degree camera technology and drone photography, and a lot of the file sizes we use are quite large,” Mr Keyes said.

“So a good internet is crucial. Having the NBN network, that speed of upload ensures we are not sitting around all day.

Potential buyers taking a virtual tour of a home listed by Mr Keyes’ agency can click on a room and “just walk right throughout the property”.

“It is very interactive and the consumer is completely in control of their experience. Using the VR [virtual reality] experience, the customer puts the goggles on and it puts them in the room.

“Real estate is so emotive, so that kind of tool is fantastic. It’s all about capturing different perspectives that is going to help the buyer connect.”

According to the NBN Ready Homes report, a fast broadband connection is one of the key purchasing decisions for future home buyers.

The study revealed that a staggering 80 per cent of Aussie house hunters rate a good broadband service as a major factor in their decision-making process.

Sixty-six per cent said they would negotiate a lower price if fast broadband was not available at the property, while 16 per cent would reject the home altogether.

NBN general manager of build partnerships, Julian Nachmias, said a fast internet connection has become an expected addition in Australian properties.

“Access to fast broadband is increasingly as important as having running water and electricity available in your home,” she said.
