More skills required to tackle industry threats, says expert

To combat the threats facing the real estate industry, agents will need to be more skilled, more professional and offer a better experience to consumers, one industry leader says.

Estate Agents Co-operative CEO David Crombie says his firm is pushing for a more skilled and professional framework for the industry, and has been working with NSW Fair Trading to move in that direction.

Mr Crombie referred to the Real Estate and Property Services Industry Reform Paper released last year as a blueprint for improvement, saying it outlines a raft of proposed changes.

“There are significant changes regarding training and CPD proposed in the paper and from our perspective they cannot come fast enough,” he said.

“We have been informed by NSW Fair Trading that during their checks there have been a number of agents that are not completing CPD. If you have not, you need to make sure you have in fact done so when renewing your licence or certificate of registration.”

Mr Crombie criticised ‘tick and flick’ training providers, saying they undermine initiatives taken to improve the industry.

He said a recent training event lasted only two and a half hours, but attendees where accredited with full CPD points.

“The event was held under Learning Category 3 which requires structured learning with an assessed learning outcome linked to either a relevant Australian university qualification or a relevant national training package outcome delivered by a registered training organisation,” Mr Crombie said.

Training under this category accumulates three points per hour of contact and assessment. Based on this, the 2.5 hours would appear to be a bit short.”
