Extra holidays best form of staff incentive: trainer

A real estate trainer has urged principals to double their staff’s holidays to get better results.

Real estate trainer Josh Phegan, who addressed the Real Estate Sales Summit in Sydney this weekend, urged principals to consider giving staff more time off as a form of incentive.

“Principals will say they only need to give four weeks' holidays by law. But if you’re not on holidays, your mind is,” Mr Phegan said.

“And when you do finally go on holiday, your head is still at work. This is a sign that you might be overworked.”

But staff must hit targets before they're rewarded, Mr Phegan added.

“I want everyone to aim to have eight weeks of holiday this year, as long as you hit budget. Because if you don’t feel good, you won’t do the work.”

While some principals prefer to focus on monetary bonuses, there has been a recent push towards more thoughtful and personal incentives.

Karl Secondis, director at One Real Estate in Darwin, believes the best incentives are the smaller things. Throughout the year, the One Real Estate office experience many perks, including 20 minutes with a massage therapist, flowers delivered on a employees work anniversary, weekly lunches every Wednesday, their birthday off work and five weeks of holidays after an employee has been with the company for one year, as well as the best tools including iPhones and iPads for each employee.

“Most of these things don’t have a huge monetary cost to our business, but can have a huge impact on how the employee feels about coming to work,” he told Residential Property Manager.
