Crime prevention and safety was a focus at a recent Victorian property management conference.
At Barry Plant’s annual Think Tank, held in Ivanhoe in Victoria last week, just fewer than 250 property managers and principals were lectured by Robin Murphy, leading senior constable from the Victorian Police Crime Prevention Unit on ways to prevent crimes in homes under management.
“These days, unfortunately property managers need to be equipped with more knowledge then just general maintenance,” Kerry Fraser, property management consultant to the Barry Plant Group told Real Estate Business.
“It is one thing for me to speak to them about crime and safety in a training course, but an entirely different thing hearing it from a constable in uniform.”
According to Mr Fraser, the talk was to equip property managers with the tools and knowledge to recognise dangerous crime in properties under management.
“Leading senior constable Murphy gave examples of what things to look out for, or smells to recognise when doing an inspection of a property,” Mr Fraser said.
“It could be these small things that are the difference between finding a drug lab or not.
“Rather than going in blind, the property managers now know what they are looking for and to contact police straight away if they suspect anything.”
The event also included an inspirational and motivational talk by international speaker, Paul Magee.
“Think tank is the biggest day of the year for us. We had representations from all of our 80 offices, which was an amazing turn out,” Mr Fraser said.
"Having an only property management conference is also so important for the team.”
