Focus on growth: trainer

Growth should be a key focus for property management agencies in 2014, according to a leading business development coach.

Deniz Yusuf from bdmcoach.com.au said growth was an important area for the industry, and he found that businesses often struggled to understand why they were not growing.

“It always comes back to two things: They're either not getting the leads that are coming into the office, or when they're getting the leads, they're not actually converting them," he said.

Mr Yusuf encouraged agencies to bring in a third party to provide a neutral analysis of their business and to reveal areas they needed to improve on – a service that he offered as a coach.

“It's quite a simple process and I think when a third person comes in and looks at it with different eyes and without any attachment to any of the employees it makes it a lot easier for them,” he said.

Consistency with training topics was paramount, with Mr Yusuf saying property management businesses ought to continue undertaking training in areas they had been focusing on last year.

“If you were doing training on particular things last year and there’s been no improvement, then dramatic changes need to occur – you need to look at other avenues.”

Mr Yusuf said any form of continual training was important to the industry.

“It needs to be encouraged because there are a lot of bad agents out there still who aren’t helping the industry.”

Mr Yusuf said that technology had created an environment where training could be undertaken by an agency without leaving the office.

“However, it's still important that they still need to go to the big events where they can keep in touch with their team and network amongst other agencies, but ultimately, training face to face is so easy these days,” he said.
