Online complaints service for tenants launched

NSW Fair Trading has launched a free tenancy complaints service that has the potential to change the way residential disputes are handled.

The statewide rollout has come after a successful six-month trial of the fast and simple service, whereby tenants, landlords and agents can lodge a complaint online.

“In the seven months to 30 June, Fair Trading received 1,522 tenancy complaints, with 88 per cent resolved without the need for higher cost resolution options,” said NSW Fair Trading minister Matthew Mason-Cox.

“This service offers a convenient alternative for residential tenancy disputes about issues such as repairs, access to premises or inspections, condition reports and ending a tenancy,” he said.

People will save time and money if their dispute is resolved through Fair Trading’s new service, as they will not be required to attend a hearing with the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Mr Mason-Cox said the new tenancy complaints service “makes sense” and has already made a difference in successfully resolving disputes.

Fair Trading has worked closely with Tenants Advice and Advocacy Services (TAAS) to develop the new system, where tenants will continue to receive information and advice from TAAS, particularly if they are vulnerable or in social housing.
