Last week RPM asked the PM industry how they combat burning out as a result of their hectic work lives. Here is what they had to say.

Managing after-hours calls

Commenting on the RPM Facebook page, Kylie Best said it is important to try and keep after-hours calls to emergencies only and ensure you set boundaries with your tenants and clients.

I recently had a lady contact me at 7pm and then at 9.45pm with a rental enquiry. I let her know nicely but firmly that I was happy to help her the next day.quote marks

Christopher Goodway commented that to avoid burnout, you have to make sure staff are rostered on for after-hours work.

“We used to have a dedicated office mobile so staff would be on call with that phone once every six weeks,” Mr Goodway said.

“Also let clients know that after-hours calls are only for emergency calls.”

Taking regular holidays and enjoying life’s small pleasures

Ali Thomson said PMs need to “focus on the positives, have a break every three months and drink wine!”

Kylie Best also commented that it's important to take regular holidays.

Hayley Mitchell said you should make sure you have time to yourself and take holidays on a regular basis.

“I also find walking a few days a week on my lunch break helps to keep my mind clear.”

Having efficient systems and processes

Jenni Wood commented that burnout normally follows the feeling of mental and emotional overload.

“Establishing systems and process for repetitive tasks can reduce untold stress.”

‘Stop, breathe and prioritise’

Sara Young said when the going gets tough, slow it down.

“Stop, breathe and prioritise. Put auto-replies on emails acknowledging receipt and giving a response time. And never be afraid to ask for help.”

Surround yourself with a positive work culture

Deniz Yusuf commented that he avoids burnout by enjoying his job and ensuring that the people around him are also doing so.

Don’t take things personally

Tania Ellis Winthers said it is important to maintain a sense of humour always and don't make other people's issues your issues - learn to push back when necessary.

Cindy Knight said PMs can’t take things personally and it is also important to take your holidays regularly.
