Facebook: How is the industry hurting itself?

Property managers may have developed or learnt some nasty habits that are doing more harm than good to themselves and the wider industry.

Our previous Facebook post asked readers to highlight the ways property managers are damaging themselves, their businesses and the industry at large – and three issues came to surface

The first problem was that of undercutting, either in rents or fee, which continues to be a hot topic within property management.

Another major issue was the quality of industry training, which has also been debated recently following the push for national standards.

The other concern was service, which ties into the problem of training but also reinforces the importance of people skills and empathy in the industry.

"Stop dropping fees! Undervaluing yourselves and the service you provide." - Melissa Karatjas

"Dropping rents too low making it difficult to do anything else but follow the trend in order to get a tenant for your owners. It's ridiculous and unfair to both owners and agents as they are creating a slump in the market where it doesn't need to be one." Quiltin Mammar

"Setting limits - push through the glass ceiling. Just because that is what others do or that is what you have always done be open to change as change can bring great things... especially if it is not working currently! I.e. soooo busy but not willing to change the method in which you work. A lot of PMs work in a method of accidental - the work drives them rather than planning their work to let them drive the work." - Melanie Jane Dennis

"Failing to treat people as people. We are not in the property business we are in the people-moving business." - Erin Marr

"I have found that a lot of property managers tend to be very closed or narrow-minded." - Rhiannon Hamilton

"Being reactive as opposed to proactive in their approach to the role, not holding themselves accountable in key areas and engaging self-sabotaging and self-destructive thought patterns and behaviours." - Jamieson Lloyd

"Lack of initial quality training." - Casey Joseph

"Not following or knowing how important the Residential Tenancy Act 2010 is to a property manager." - Amanda Shirvington

"Badly trained people. Sales people who can't seem to grasp the concept of being proactive with buyers and sellers. Property managers who can't seem to even spell 'service'. Seems worse in Queensland." - Mike Beamish
