Take accountability in 2020

As the door opens on not only a new year but a new decade, a leading real estate coach considers this as the right time to set a vision for the future.

Sherrie Storor said the new year is the right time to review, pivot and plan a vision for the future, and she believes accountability is key to turning your resolution into a reality.

“Many agents find holding themselves accountable really tough,” Ms Storor said. “To do so, you need to be brutally honest with yourself. You need to acknowledge your behaviours and actions, and recognise how these impact your performance as an agent. Accountability is essential if you want to stay on track to achieve your professional and personal goals.”

She said the best way to plan your direction forward is to sit down and reflect on the past year and the progress made. Consider what worked, what has not and how you can do better.

“Doing this review each year is central to success. It helps me to plan out my goals for the next 12 months and, importantly, is the foundation of my career success and how I’ve been able to build my best life.”

Although there are many online tools to boost performance, it is also essential to write it down, she said.

“Richard Branson says, ‘Note-taking is one of my favourite pastimes’, and credits a portion of his success to his notebook — an old-fashioned binder he’s renowned for carrying everywhere. Oprah Winfrey believes that keeping a daily diary is the single most important thing she’s ever done and that it’s changed her life in ways she’s never imagined. And Nelson Mandela said recording daily observations and tasks helped him to embrace and shed light on facets of his life that he might have never known existed.”

While it is easy to get lost in a smartphone or tablet to plan your life, the sale of paper diaries are on the rise, and Ms Storor is not surprised, as writing something down means we are more likely to remember it and commit to taking action.

“When it comes to real estate, the discipline of reflecting on your professional and personal life, and recording your goals and dreams in writing, is essential because it keeps you accountable. It’s a discipline I apply to my life, and one that the agents I coach have implemented to achieve greater levels of success.”

To make a critical plan for 2020, she suggests making a note of the last year’s financial figures.

“Write down your GCI, number of sales, average VPA and other key indicators. Then list your top 10 achievements, in both your professional and personal lives. Doing this is a great way to celebrate everything you achieved in 2019. And don’t forget to note any areas for improvement,” she said.

“The next step is to decide what you want your best life to look like in 2020. Think about your health, family, relationships, lifestyle, personal growth, career and finances. This is your vision and will form the basis of your action plan, so you can hold yourself accountable.

“Over the course of my sales career, I’ve developed daily, weekly and monthly planning and accountability templates that have allowed me to build my best life and achieve my dreams, both professionally and personally.”
