No office, no problem: Why this 32-year-old went independent

Amid the pandemic, agent Aaron Worrad saw “one of the biggest years for sales” he’s ever had, which ultimately prompted him to consider a new way of doing business.

In a bid to produce more optimal results for his clients as well as maximise the fruits of his labour, Mr Worrad recently bid farewell to a traditional franchise agency and launched his very own business, Worrad Property, on the Gold Coast.

Prior to jumping aboard the independent business train, he was working for a major franchise in Surfers Paradise, which he credits for good training and allowing him to build out an expansive network.

But Mr Worrad soon felt that “some things didn’t seem right”.

“I just think the future of agencies is no longer in the big franchise model. Ultimately, I wanted to do something for myself, and I was feeling a bit limited where I was,” he said.

“My market is high-rise and beach-side apartments along the coast. A lot of my clients and buyers are interstate or international, and because of this, most of my meetings and inspections are online, video link or over the phone. I don’t need to be working in a big office or for a big company to do that.

“Last year was one of the biggest years for sales that I’ve ever had, and I hardly went into the office. I spent 10 months working from home.”

According to him, the option to boost his own brand and retain more commission were big factors that drove his move to a more independent model.

“One thing I really love about real estate is that your income is determined by how hard you work, and I love putting deals together and interacting with clients,” he said.

Moving forward, the business owner said a “new era in real estate” is bound to take over as the pandemic shifts the needs and wants of buyers, sellers and even real estate professionals.

“The ironic part is that real estate had to catch up with other industries already utilising the technological advantages UrbanX offers. That’s why I knew this platform would be the right fit for me,” he said.

Looking ahead, Mr Worrad said that his plans are focused on providing “optimal results” for his clients.

As an established agent, he sees UrbanX as a platform “that works really well, as long as you have that drive and determination to work for yourself”.
