It’s no secret that the outlook for 2023 poses challenges for real estate agents.

Agents who have experienced similar market cycles and challenges in the past know what to expect and what it takes to weather them.

Agents who have only experienced times in which properties virtually sold themselves have a different set of challenges, yet also tremendous opportunities to hone their craft. Calm waters do not make a skillful sailor!

Here are five qualities that will allow you to achieve success and stay on top of your game.

1. Commitment

Commit to the course and the cause. This means showing up for yourself, your team, and the people you’re looking to serve. Knowing what that looks like for each is important.

2. Connection

Never lose that connection to yourself — who you are and what you value, for that is what you take out into the world. When you are clear on that, you have much to give and your connection with others is strong.

3. Focus

Everything you see is two ends of the same stick — the absence of something or the presence of something e.g. the absence of listings or the presence of listings. What you focus on grows. Which end of the stick are you picking up?

4. Resourcefulness

You have untapped potential within you. What can you do to tap into it? When one door closes, another one opens. Be ready to walk through the door.

5. Curiosity

Be curious. Ask powerful questions of yourself and others. Seek feedback. Certainty is the enemy of growth.

Follow these seven tips to set you up for success, both professionally and personally.

1. Know what success means to you

There’s no point climbing the ladder of success only to find it was leaning against the wrong wall. Get clear on what you want, why you want it, and how you’ll know when you’ve got it. Revisit it often.

2. Be intentional

There are only so many hours in a day; you get to choose how you spend them. Use time intentionally to consistently move in the direction of what is important to you. If you don’t spend time on high-priority actions, low-priority actions will take their place.

3. Align with the right people

Spend time with and follow people who share your values and who want you to succeed. There are people who care about your success and are willing to invest in you, whether it be time, advice or financially. Set yourself up to succeed.

4. Feed your mind

Feed your mind with things that make you feel good, that inspire you, that challenge you, that puts you in a resourceful state that allows you to focus on what’s important.

5. Back yourself

The only person that knows what’s truly in your heart is you. Your insight is yours. Give yourself permission to have what you want and be the person you want to be.

6. Have boundaries

Boundaries tell us and other people what is okay and what is not okay for us. Know what your boundaries are. They are actually a mark of respect to yourself and the people around you.

7. Do things that make you feel good

Regeneration is important. Allocate time for things that cause you to feel alive. This allows you to bring energy to other areas of your life. Good decisions are made from this energised place.

Don’t wait to be successful

It can be easy to think that when you have achieved the goal, you’ll be (insert appropriate emotion here).

A client was excited to be reaching the million-dollar milestone. Upon doing so, she realised it felt empty.

With a belief on some level that her life would be different when she achieved this significant milestone, that she would feel different, it proved not to be true.

She was the same person at the moment after she achieved the goal as she was in the moment before.

Expecting the achievement of the goal to be the source of her happiness and using it as her measure of success, she came to understand that the real achievement was under her nose all along.

Focusing on the external, she had missed the growth that had taken place internally. That growth was not happening sometime in the future, it was happening in present moments. They are easy to miss if you are not looking for them!

It is not the achievement of the goal that matters. Becoming the person you need to be in order to achieve that goal? That’s where life happens and real fulfilment resides.
