A decade ago, Matthew Everingham’s routine looked a lot different, and so did his results. The agent explained how getting his health and environment right allowed him to achieve the results he’s become accustomed to today.

Fast forward to the present day, the agent from Richard Matthews Real Estate ranked 13th in REB’s New South Wales agent rankings for 2023, and 11th in the publication’s Top 100 Agents Ranking 2023, having sold 198 properties for a total value of $417.4 million in the 2022 calendar year, a time which wasn’t particularly conducive to real estate success.

And while the last 10 years have seen the world around him experience significant change, amongst other things new presidents and prime ministers have come and gone and technological advancements have deepened their influence on society, Mr Everingham explained the big difference between who he is now and who he was comes down to two major changes in his life: appreciating fitness and surrounding himself with a positive environment.

“I wasn’t doing the same things [then] because I didn’t have the same good routines around personal health and fitness,” he said.

An early riser, Mr Everingham shared he usually spends 45 minutes each day working out with his trainer – often between 6:15am and 7am. Outside of his fitness goals, he noted his aim during these sessions is “to make that my time, so it keeps me fresh”.

“To get that time away from the phone, I think it allows you to start your day well,” he said.

“Get yourself right in the morning and your day will flow from there,” Mr Everingham added.

These are words he practises, not just preaches.

“I know if I’m auctioning early on a Saturday morning, which is often the case, I need to make sure that I train early so that I’m switched on and ready to go.

“I think that’s critical to my success because if you feel healthier, you’re going to perform better; you’re not going to be tired,” he added.

Mr Everingham believes the endorphin-induced energy he generates during his early morning training sessions is not just limited to him, rather he suggests it spreads throughout his office.

“I think a big part of our success here is our energy,” he said. In his eyes, it’s a kind of energy not just generated through sweat, but one which is a by-product of everyone pulling in the same direction.

On his search to “surround himself with positive people”, a quest which has been key to his transformation, he’s landed at an outfit which he deems as “incredibly positive and energetic”.

And from this garden of positivity at Richard Matthews Real Estate, Mr Everingham is able to harvest a deep passion for his work, not that he’d quite call it “work”.

“I just love what I do. I love hanging around them [his colleagues]. I enjoy it. I don’t consider it work. I wouldn’t do it seven days a week if I didn’t really enjoy it,” he said.

He believes it’s nearly impossible to do work “properly” without this genuine connection and love for the environment surrounding you each day.

“I genuinely enjoy being with my team,” he said, adding he’d “do anything to help them and I know in return [they’ll] do the same for me”.

“Surrounding yourself with the right people, they’re going to push you up,” he stressed.

“It’s the biggest thing we have here.”

And following a bumper August, described as the outfit’s biggest ever in sales and property management, Mr Everingham insisted it’s the team’s attitude which will ensure the year’s end is as fruitful as its eighth month.

“Mindset is critical,” he said. “We all believe in each other. We have a belief [that we will end the year strong]. That’s it.”

“There’s no better feeling than when everyone’s rowing in one direction [and] I think that’s what we have at the moment with our current team,” he concluded.
