For the second year running a New Zealander has won the Australasian Auctioneering Championship.
Held in Adelaide, the award, which is open to members of eligible Real Estate Institutes in Australia and New Zealand, was handed to its youngest winner, Daniel Coulson, from Bayleys Realty Group in Auckland.
The other finalists were Michael Fenn (SA), Ben Brady (QLD), last year’s winner Andrew North (NZ) and Rob Mason (WA).
This is the fifth time a New Zealander has won the award from the 14 occasions the event has been held. Previous winners include John McGrath, Jason Andrew and Michael Brock.
According to the host of the event, the Real Estate Institute of SA (REISA), the Australasian Auctioneering Championship tests an auctioneer’s skill and ability to command a crowd, manage any issues at the auction and call complex bidding offers.
The final, which was held yesterday, saw the contestants ‘sell’ a property owned by Adelaide-based real estate professional, Anthony Toop.
“The property used was mixed commercial and residential land, the bidding were fast and furious, and there was an even a medical emergency to contend with during each auctioneer’s frantic 15 minutes on stage,” REISA said. “The outcome of each auction was that the property was sold for $7.1 million.”
Announcing the winner, REISA chief executive officer, Greg Troughton, said that Daniel Coulson won a toughly fought competition, with five outstanding finalists.
“It was fantastic to see the spirit and professionalism that all of the auctioneers displayed today and they are an inspiration to those working in real estate,” Mr Troughton said.
“Everyone congratulates Daniel Coulson on his win tonight and notes that he’s only 22 and our youngest ever winner.”
“To see young people excelling so early in their career shows they are incredibly focused, determined and professional.”
Auctioneers from NSW were excluded from this year's event, as the Real Estate Institute of NSW (REINSW) is not a member of the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA).
