Accountability key part of online training program

An online property management training program that measures competency and encourages lateral thinking has generated strong interest from the industry, its developer has said.

Real +, developed by 20-year industry veteran Fiona Blayney, is a competency based e-learning tool which offers integrated courses and business resources for agency principals and property management teams.

“The Real + system is a ‘living’ product which is regularly updated with new course content and up-to-the-minute training resources,” the company said.

A key component of the e-learning website is tracking user interaction and performance through its HTML5 software, allowing principals to keep tabs on where staff are at in terms of their professional development.

Human interaction remains an important part of what Ms Blayney offers, she continued, a view that's consistent with the findings of a recent education and CPD report conducted by Real Estate Business. Published in the January 2103 issue, the report found that while online training has an important place in the industry, face-to-face education events remained popular for their ability to bring together like-minded professionals who could learn from each other.

“As a macro comment, there’s so many things that come up in property management … you have to talk to other people [to help learn],” she said. “The thing with Real + is not to replace face-to-face or interaction, it’s more to provide a continuum through the year, and providing everyone with the same training.”

It’s for this reason that Ms Blayney, who delivers personal coaching, also provides users access to exclusive groups, which are based on geographic areas and limited to people in similar job roles. There are a maximum of five people in these groups, she added.

Ms Blayney said there’s also been a great response to the REAL + webinars, which in some cases have content that gets property managers thinking outside the square. This included a recent webinar which focused on what it cost a landlord to own an investment property, and how this compared to the average income.

“It gives property managers a completely different perspective,” she said. “That’s what I like to do. While the modules are there to give you the base level [of training] … my stuff is more to get you thinking.”

State-based legislation updates – and how changes should be interpreted by property managers – were also a feature of the service, she said.

Ms Blayney said much more content will be added to the website in the coming months, and she has already introduced a 12-week ‘boot camp’ to help upskill property managers.
