Don’t let top agents crush your soul

There are pitfalls to listening to successful agents talk about their earnings and how easy it is.

One top agent says the only key to success in the Australian real estate market is hard work and discipline.

“The reality is it is hard work, it is discipline and what I had to learn was to get more disciplined. There are no shortcuts. You’ve got to get in there, you have to make the calls, you’ve got to work smarter and you do have to work longer than any of your competitors because people will remember that and they will come to you for service,” D’Leanne Lewis of Laing + Simmons Double Bay said at AREC 2016.

Ms Lewis, who ranked number four in REB’s Top 50 Women in Real Estate 2016, spoke with Tom Panos about how listening to top agents speak at conferences can provide an inaccurate view of how much work is required to be successful.

“I take away from a lot of these conference that it’s really soul destroying when you think you’re doing all you can and yet people that say, 'Oh, I’m writing a million dollars, I’m writing 10 million dollars,’” Ms Lewis said.

“It’s actually not that easy. It’s a lot of hard ... and it takes a long time to get there and it’s very easy to think ‘I’m not doing enough, I’m not doing enough’ because these people, they make it sound so easy to write a few million dollars.”

Ms Lewis said the secret to the longevity is playing the long game, building relationships with prospective clients and focusing on more than the commission, and hard work and long hours.
